生物脱臭是利用载体填料比表面积上微生物的作用脱臭。臭气物质先被填料吸收，然后被填料上附着的微生物氧化分解，从而完成臭气的除臭过程。 为了使微生物保持高的活性，必须为之创造一个良好的生存环境，比如：适宜的湿度、pH值、氧气含量、温度和营养成分等。 实际生产设计要求，载体填料相对湿度保持在80～95%，所以经常采用喷淋原污水或初沉池出水以提供水分和营养源。在填料选择方面, 生物脱臭塔最主要部分是填料。一种好的载体填料必须满足： 容许生长的微生物种类丰富；为微生物提供栖息生长大的比表面积； 营养成分合理（N、P、K和微量元素）；常用的填料有：塑料、半软性塑料、干树皮、干草、纤维性泥炭或其混合物。 脱臭塔填料的堆放高度取决于所要求的停留时间和表面负荷。工程上填料高度一般为1.0～1.2 m。
